At a time of late 20th century political turmoil in Ireland, an IRA volunteer, Fergus Hennessy (Stephen Rea), holds kidnapped British soldier, Jody (Forrest Whitaker), hostage. The two develop a bond; but when the kidnapping goes sour, Fergus flees to London and finds Jody's girlfriend Dil (Jaye Ferguson). While the two develop an attraction, their complicated relationship must endure a series of revelations about human nature and sexuality.

In an article from The Gazette (Montreal) 2000, Rea comments on how art attempts to enlighten people. He says, "The whole point of The Crying Game is that by an act of imagination, by an act of humanity, you can change things. You can change yourself."

The film's premiere happened to coincide with Stephen Rea's appearance in the well known play on Broadway, Someone Who'll Watch Over Me, November, 1992. Stephen Rea was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in this film, and Neil Jordan won the Academy Award for Best Screenplay.

Miranda Richardson has also appeared in the Neil Jordan film, The Actors (2003) and has numerous credits in film and television, including the recent television production of The Lost Prince, (2003) with a cast including Bill Nighy from the film Still Crazy (1998). She can also be seen in the film, The Hours (2002) with Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep.

The multitalented Forest Whitaker has a variety of film acting credits and can also be seen with Stephen Rea in the film Prêt-à-Porter (1994). Also, he has acted in many films, including Platoon (1986) with Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe. And, he has also appeared in many other films including, The Color of Money (1986), Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), Bird (1988) and Panic Room and Phone Booth (both 2002). He also appeared with Kevin Kline Consenting Adults (1992).

Forest Whitaker is also a film
director, and he has directed such films as Hope Floats (1998) and Waiting to Exhale (1995).
